A.I. could be ‘worst event in the history of our civilisation’: Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking recently stated something alarming about AI (artificial intelligence). He warned the society that AI could be the “worst event in the history of our civilisation”. He stressed that we need to finds means to control AI development.

Hawking also stressed that computers can emulate human intelligence, and exceed it too in terms of theory. He also talked about the AI potential in order to help undo damage done to the natural world, or do away with disease and poverty and disease.

“Success in creating effective AI, could be the biggest event in the history of our civilisation. Or the worst. We just don’t know. So we cannot know if we will be infinitely helped by AI, or ignored by it and side-lined, or conceivably destroyed by it.”

To remain safe from this potential reality, AI creators must make use of the finest  practice and effective management, he added.

He said that he believes that we can create AI for the good of the world. All we need to do is to be aware of its dangers, identify them, use the best possible practice as well as management, he added. He also noted that we need to prepare for its consequences well before hand.
